Macintosh Authentication for Windows 2003
Servers
By default, Windows 2003 only permits two kinds of client authentication:
Microsoft User Authentication Module (UAM) clients or Clear Text.
The UAM method is the most secure but you must download a client to each
of your Macintosh workstations. To use this method, go to the Microsoft
Web page (www.microsoft.com) and search for the latest UAM client. For
more information, you can also search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for
article 838331.
The Clear Text method is less secure but it can be enabled for all of your
Macintosh workstations conveniently from your Windows 2003 server. If
you choose to enable Clear Text to authenticate your Macintosh
workstations, complete the following steps:
1. At the server, right-click on the My Computer icon and click
Manage.
2. Right-click on Shared Folders, and then click Configure File
Server for Macintosh.
3. Click the Configuration tab.
4. In the Enable authentication list box, click Apple Clear Text or
Microsoft.
5. Click OK.
Once you have employed your authentication strategy, go to “Sharing a
Folder for Macintosh Clients on a Server Running Windows 2003” on
page 39.
