TROUBLESHOOTING
The battery is not being charged.
Check:
1. main fuse
2. battery
3. charging voltage
4. stator coil resistance
5. wiring connections
(of the entire charging system)
TIP
8 Before troubleshooting, remove the follow-
ing part(s):
1. battery box cover
2. front cover
3. leg shield 1
8 Troubleshoot with the following special
tool(s).
Digital tachometer

3. Charging voltage
8 Connect the digital tachometer to the spark
plug lead of cylinder.
8 Connect the pocket tester (DC 20 V) to the
battery as shown.

8 Start the engine and let it run at approxi-
mately 5,000 r/min.
8 Measure the charging voltage.
Charging voltage
14 V at 5000r/min

1. Main fuse
8 Check the main fuse for continuity.
Refer to “CHECKING THE FUSES” in chap-
ter 3.
8 Is the main fuse OK?
YES NO

2. Battery
8 Check the condition of the battery.
Refer to “CHECKING AND CHARGING
THE BATTERY” in chapter 3.
Minimum open-circuit voltage
12.8 V or more at 20°C (68°F)
8 Is the battery OK?
YES NO
8 Clean the battery
terminals.
8 Recharge or re-
place the battery.
Replace the fuse.
