3.7 Setting Alarms
The
NAV
398 has three operator programmable alarms that you can set to
advise you when limits have been reached.
The types of alarms available
are:
l
ARRIVAL- Arrival at a waypoint.
l
ANCHOR
-
Exceeds Anchor drift limit.
l
OFF COURSE- Straying too far from track.
Whenever an alarm is set and activated, the audible beeper will sound and
the alarm characters will blink on-screen. You can set an Arrival alarm or
Anchor alarm, but not both types together. Press the[CLEARlkey to silence
the audio alarm.

To set an Arrival alarm:

ALARMS
screen appears. This is the alarm set-up screen. Press
theI-
softkey. Then enter the distance value for the desired arrival alarm zone with
the numeric keys.
Press-to finish the entry and exit back to the last
used display mode.

There are several factors which should be

Among these factors are: the speed your

vessel is or will be traveling, the weather condi-
tions (foggy, rain, clear, etc.), and your familiarity

with the surroundings.
PRESS CLEAR TO EXIT
A vessel traveling at 30 knots, will travel 180,000
ft/hour, 3000 ft/minute, or
50
ft/sec., so an arrival alarm set to 0.0 lnm gives
you 1.2 seconds to react. If the alarm were set to 0.2nm, (1200 ft) you will
have 24 seconds to decide your course of action. In the
