Therefore, the prudent navigator will not only take ad-
vantage of all available navigation tools when traveling
to a waypoint, but will also visually check to make sure
a clear, safe path to the waypoint is always available.
Straight-line Navigation Commands
There are two basic commands used for straight-line navigation: Go To
Cursor and Go To Waypoint. The Go To Cursor command will guide
you to any spot, landscape feature or waypoint you select on the map
with the cursor arrow.
The Go To Waypoint command works with the iWAY 600 Address Book
feature. This command lets you look up waypoints you have created
and saved, then takes you to them. (This also works for commercial
Points of Interest (POIs). In fact, you can launch straight-line naviga-
tion to anything you can look up with the Find key.)
But before you head off into the woods on your ATV, or across the lake
in your boat, it's important that you understand the term "waypoint."
Why? To navigate back to your trailhead or boat ramp, you must first
mark the spot by making a waypoint there.
Waypoints = Contacts
If you have been creating contacts and adding them to the Address
Book in turn-by-turn mode, you already understand the waypoint con-
cept. A turn-by-turn "contact" is actually a "waypoint" in point-to-point
mode, and vice versa. The Address Book in your iWAY is essentially a
waypoint list with additional features, like places to record street ad-
dresses or phone numbers. All navigation modes in this unit share the
same Address Book for storing contacts/waypoints.
"Waypoint" is the term originally used in GPS to mark a spot. It's the
word still commonly used in all straight-line GPS navigation. A way-
point is similar to an electronic "address" based on the latitude and lon-
gitude of a position on the earth. A waypoint represents a location or
destination that you can store in the unit's memory and recall later for
navigational purposes.
