Remove Ignition Module
1. Disconnect kill lead from ignition module.
2. Rotate ywheel magnet away from module.
3. Remove RFI sheathed spark plug lead from
retaining clip, if so equipped.
4. Remove screws and ignition module.
Remove Debris Screen, Fan, and Flywheel
NOTE: Always use a ywheel strap wrench or ywheel
holding tool (see Tools and Aids) to hold ywheel
when loosening or tightening ywheel and fan
retaining fasteners. Do not use any type of bar
or wedge between ns of cooling fan, as ns
could become cracked or damaged.
NOTE: Always use a puller to remove ywheel from
crankshaft. Do not strike crankshaft or ywheel,
as they could be cracked or damaged.
1. Unsnap debris screen from cooling fan.
2. Remove retaining screw, washer and fan mounting
plate, securing fan and ywheel to crankshaft.
3. Carefully lift cooling fan to disengage two drive pins
and remove it from ywheel.
4. Remove ywheel from crankshaft using a puller.
5. Remove ywheel key from crankshaft.
Flywheel Inspection
Inspect ywheel for cracks and check keyway for wear
or damage. Replace ywheel if cracked. If ywheel key
is sheared or keyway is damaged, replace crankshaft,
ywheel, and key.
Inspect ring gear for cracks or damage. Ring gears are
not available separately. Replace ywheel if ring gear is
damaged.
Remove Stator
NOTE: To disconnect B+ or stator leads from wiring
harness connector, insert a small screwdriver, or
similar narrow at blade, and bend down locking
tang of terminal(s). Gently pull lead(s) out of
connector.
Remove screws securing stator to closure plate bosses.
