TRANSFER CASE SHIFTING
PROCEDURES
The part time 4WD system provides 3 positions
(2WD, 4H and 4LO), so you can select the
desired drive mode accordingto the driving con-
ditions.
2WD or 4WD shift procedure:
4WD Shift
Switch Position
Wheels
Driven
Indicator Light
Use Conditions 4WD ShiftProcedure
4WD shift Transfer 4LO position
2WD
Rear wheels
For drivingon dry,paved
roads (Economydrive)
Move the4WD switch.
2WD <—>4H
4WD shiftindicator light will indicatetransfer shift position en-
gaged.

For drivingon rocky,sandy
or snow-coveredroads
Neutral

Neutral disengagesthe
automatic transmission
mechanical parkinglock,
which willallow the vehicle
to roll.Do not leave the
transfer shiftposition in
Neutral.*2
1. Stop the vehicle.
2. For automatic transmissionvehicles: Shift theshift selector to
the (N)position with the brakepedal depressed.
For manualtransmission vehicles: Shift theshift selector to the
(N) positionwith the clutch depressed.
3. For automatic transmissionvehicles: Depress andturn the
4WD shiftswitch to 4LO or 4Hwith the brakepedal de-
pressed.
For manualtransmission vehicles: Depress andturn the 4WD
switch to4LO or4H with the clutchpedal depressed.
THE TRANSFERCASE DOES NOT ENGAGEBETWEEN 4H AND
4LO (OR 4LO TO4H) UNLESS YOU HAVE FIRSTSTOPPEDTHE
VEHICLE, DEPRESSEDTHE BRAKE PEDAL ANDMOVED THE
SHIFT SELECTOR TONEUTRAL FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMIS-
SION VEHICLES.FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES
