Profile Window - In this window, your current position (or cursor po-
sition if cursor is up) is always at the left edge of the screen. The ter-
rain ahead of you stretches to the right. The line extending from the
aircraft nose is your altitude and vertical speed indicator. In level
flight, the altitude line is parallel to the ground. In a climb, the altitude
line will swing up. It will swing down when descending. Controlled air-
spaces are shown in different colors and in the appropriate 2D shapes.
Note that vertical speed and altitude information in this display are
not as accurate as the position information.
The terrain appears in cross-section at the bottom of the window. The
terrain is color coded to indicate the relative elevation below you. Ob-
stacles are represented by a line extending into the air, with a circular
callout at the top of the line. The callout shows proximity to your track:
an X indicates the obstacle is on your track or within 500 feet of it; an L
indicates the obstacle is more than 500 feet to the left of your track, an
R indicates the obstacle is more than 500 feet to the right of your track.
HSI Map display option (Compass Rose With HSI and OBS Hold)
The HSI Map combines several instruments and situational awareness tools
that offer the look of a "glass cockpit" panel display. The instruments sur-
rounding the central compass rose are discussed when we describe the Map
Page's Map Panel option on page 35. Now, we want to talk about the heart
of this display – the compass rose – and its Horizontal Situation Indicator.
The compass rose shows your direction of travel and the direction to a
recalled waypoint or other destination, such as an airport or VOR. It
can also show your intended course and whether you are currently on
course or off course.
The navigation screen looks like the one in the following image when you're
not navigating to a waypoint or other destination. No graphic course infor-
mation is displayed. Your position is shown by an airplane symbol in the
center of the screen. The arrow pointing down at the top of the compass rose
indicates the current track (direction of travel) over the ground.
