Spark Arrestor
WARNING
Failure to heed the following w arnings while servicing the spark
arrestor could result i n serious injury or death.
Do not perform service on the spark arrestor while the system is
hot. Exhaust system temperatures can reach 1000° F. Allow
components to cool sufficiently before proceeding.
Remove any combustible materials from the area.
Wear eye p rotection and glov es.
Do not stand behind or in front of the vehicle while pur ging.
Never r un the engine in an enclosed area. Exhaust c ontains
poisonous c arbon monoxide gas that c an cause loss of
consciousness o r death in a very s hort time.
Never go under t he vehicle while it’s inclined.
Use the fo llowing p rocedure to p eriodically pur ge accumulated carbon
from the exhaust pipe.
1. Remove the arrestor clean-out
plugs (1) located on the bottom of
the muffler.
2. Shift the transmission to neutral.
Apply the brakes. Start the
engine.
3. Purge accumulated carbon fro m
the system by momentarily
revving the engine several times.
4. If carbon is expelled, cover or plug the exhaust outlet (2) and rap
on the pipe around the clean-out plugs while revving the engine
several more times.
5. If particles are still suspected to be in the muffler, elevate the rear
of the vehicle one foot higher than the front. Engage the park
brake. B l ock t he wheels. Make sure the transmission is in neutral
and repeat steps 3 and 4 until no more particles are expelled when
the engine is revved.
6. Stop the engine. Allow the arrestor to cool.
7. Reinstall the arrestor plugs and remove the outlet cover or plug.
