Coolant. General
The freshwater system must be filled with a coolant
that protects the engine against internal corrosion and
from freezing, if the climate requires it.
IMPORTANT! Never use water alone.
If the freshwater system is filled with antifreeze
mixture it must be changed every other year. If the
system is filled with anti-corrosion agent mixture it
must be changed every year.
We recommend that a mixture of water and Volvo
Penta antifreeze is used all year round, regardless
of the climate.
Water quality
To avoid the risk of blocking the cooling system the
coolant should be mixed with clean water. If there is
any doubt over the water quality distilled water or
premixed coolant should be used.
In event of risk of freezing
Use a mixture of 50% Volvo Penta antifreeze (glycol)
and 50% pure water. This mixture will protect against
freezing to a temperature of approx. -40ºC (-40ºF) and
should be used all year round.
Mix the coolant in a separate container before filling.
IMPORTANT! There should be at least 40%
antifreeze in the system for complete protection
against corrosion.
WARNING! Glycol is harmful to health (danger-
ous if ingested).
Maintenance: Freshwater system
Freshwater system
The freshwater system is the engine's internal cooling system. It is a closed system and must always be filled
with a coolant that protects it against internal corrosion and freezing when the climate demands.
The circulation pump ensures sufficient circulation in the system. The thermostat will start to open at a certain
temperature and will be fully open when the engine has attained normal operating temperature. When the thermo-
stat opens, the warm coolant passes through the heat exchanger where it is cooled by the water in the engine’s
seawater system.
