BREAKING
Theoperatorshouldnotethesoundoftheblowwhen
thebreakerisrunning.Withexperience,theoperatorwill
beabletotellthedifferencebetweenagoodsolidblow
andahollowsoundingblow.Ahollowblowmeansthat
solidblowsarenotoccurringandthebreakershouldbe
repositioned.
Continuoustoolpenetrationusuallydoesnotdomuch
good.Ifthematerialdoesnotbreakwith3to4inchesof
toolpenetration,itusuallywon’tbreakwithfullpenetra-
tion.Thetimeusedforadditionalpenetrationcouldbe
betterusedtostrikeblowsinanotherplace.

Continuousbreakinginthesameareaforlengthy
periodswillcreateexcessivetemperaturesat
thetipofthetoolbitresultinginlossoftemper
(hardness)ofthebitandcausingmushroomingof
thetipofthebit,andmayleadtofailureofthebit.
Manymaterialsdonotrespondwelltocontinuedham-
meringinoneplace.Thebreakertoolshouldbereposi-
tioned on the workeach time the tool penetrates but
doesnotcrackthematerial.

Usea“scoring”methodofbreakingwhencrackingthe
materialbecomesdifcult.Thistechniqueinvolvesstrik-
ingtherockorconcreteatseveralplacesalongaline
whereyouwantthecracktooccur.Mostmaterialsbreak
sooner when struck several places along a line than
whenstruckrepeatedlyinonelocation.Oneachline,the
breakertoolshouldbecontinuallyrepositioned.Practice
determinesthebestlengthoftimetostayinonespot
(15-20seconds)andhowfartomovethebreakertool.
Breakertoolbinding cancauseerraticbreakeropera-
tionandprematurewearonthetoolshank.Breakertool
bindingiscausedbyfailuretodirectthedownforcein
thedirectionofthetoolbit.
