MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION
Spark Arrestor
Use the following p rocedure to p eriodical ly purge accumulated carbon
from the exhaust pipe/muffler.
1. Remove the arrestor clean-out plug
(1) from the bottom of the muffler.
2. Place the transmission in neutral
and start the engine.
3. Purge carbon from the system by
momentarily revving the engine
several times.
4. If carbon is expelled, cover the exhaust outlet and rap on the pipe
around the cleanout plug while revving the engine several more
times.
5. If particles are still suspected to be in the muffler, back the vehicle
onto an incline so the rear of the vehicle is one foot higher than the
front. Set the parking brake and block the wheels. Make sure the
vehicle is in neutral and r epeat steps 3 and 4.
6. If particles are still suspected to be in the m uffler, drive the vehicle
onto the incline so the front of the vehicle is one foot higher than
the rear. S et the parking brake and block the wheels. Make sure
the vehicle is in neutral a nd repeat s teps 3 an d 4. Repeat steps 3
through 6 until no more particles are expelled when the engine is
revved.
7. Stop the engine and allow the arrestor to cool. R einstall the
arrestor plug.
WARNING
Failure to heed the following warnings while servicing the spar k
arrest or could result in ser ious injury or death.
Do not perform service on the spark arrestor while the system is
hot. Exhaust system temperatures ca n reach 1000° F. Allow
components to cool sufficiently before proceeding.
Remove any combustible materials from the area.
Wear eye protection.
Do not stand behind or in front of the vehicle while purging.
Never run th e engine in an enclosed area. Exhaust contains
poisonous carbon m onoxide gas.
Never go under th e vehicle while it’s inclined.
