Occupant safety
In this section you will learn the most im-
portant facts about the restraint systems
of the vehicle.
The restraint systems are
ț Seat belts
ț Emergency tensioning device (ETD)
ț Air bags
ț Child seats
ț Child seat recognition
As independent systems, their protective
effects work in conjunction with each
other.
The 1 indicator lamp in the speedome-
ter dial (
୴ page 24) comes on
ț for about 4 seconds when you turn the
SmartKey in the starter switch to
position 1. It then goes out briefly,
comes on again and remains lit until
you start the engine.
ț for about 4 seconds when you start the
engine by turning the SmartKey.
The 1 indicator lamp goes out shortly
after you start the engine. This shows that
the restraint systems are operational.
A malfunction in the system has been de-
tected if the 1 indicator lamp
ț fails to extinguish after approximately
4 seconds with the SmartKey in the
starter switch position 1
ț does not come on at all
ț comes on after the engine was started
ț comes on while driving
For safety reasons, we strongly recom-
mend that you visit an authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center immediately to
have the system checked.

The 1 indicator lamp remains lit if

and left there. The indicator lamp will
