Engine Oil Draining
1. Turn the key switch to the OFF position and remove the key. Place the Forward/Reverse handle in the
NEUTRAL position. Chock the front wheels.
2. Disconnect the battery cables, negative (–) cable first. See WARNING “To avoid unintentionally start-
ing...” on page 10.
3. Remove the oil filler cap to allow the oil to drain properly.
4. Position a pan designed for oil changes under the drain plug (Figure 23 or Figure 24, Page 36).
5. From the underside of the vehicle, use a socket- or box-end (do not use an open-end) wrench to remove
the drain plug (1). Turn the plug counterclockwise and drain the engine oil into the pan. See following
WARNING.
ý WARNING
• Do not attempt to change engine oil when the engine is hot or even warm. Hot engine oil can
cause skin burns.
• Wear safety glasses or approved eye protection when servicing the vehicle. Wear rubber
gloves when handling oil drain plug, oil filter, and oil drain pan.
6. Clean the oil drain plug threads with solvent to remove oil and oil residue. Make sure that the compres-
sion washer remains on the drain plug. Inspect the compression washer and replace if necessary.
7. Use a socket- or box-end (do not use an open-end) wrench to replace the oil drain plug (1) (Figure 22
or Figure 23). Turn the plug clockwise and tighten to 29 ft-lb (40 N·m) for gas vehicles, 31 ft-lb (42 N·m)
for diesel vehicles.
