Beforelightingyourrstreintheappliance:
1. Conrm the bafe and ceramic blanket arecorrectly
positioned.Seefordetaileddiagrams.They
shouldbeevenwiththefronttubeandrestingonboth
tubes.
2. Removealllabelsfromglass.
Therearemanywaystobuildare.Thebasicprinciple
istolighteasily-ignitabletinderorpaper,whichignitesthe
fastburningkindling,whichinturnignitestheslow-burning
rewood.Hereisonemethodthatworkswell:
1. Raise
theBurnRateAirControltotheHighSetting.
2. Place several wads of crushed paper onthe rebox
oor.Heatingtheuewithslightlycrumplednewspaper
beforeaddingkindlingkeepssmoketoaminimum.
3. Laysmalldrysticksofkindlingontopofthepaper.
4. Makesurethatnomatchesorothercombustiblesarein
theimmediateareaoftheappliance.Besuretheroom
isventilatedandtheueunobstructed.
5. Lightthepaperintheappliance.NEVERlightorrekindle
rewithkerosene,gasoline,orcharcoallighteruid;the
resultscanbefatal.
6. Oncethekindlingisburningquickly,addseveralfull-
lengthlogs3to4inches(76to102mm)indiameter.
Becarefulnottosmotherthere.Stackthepiecesof
wood1/2inchto1inchapart;nearenoughtokeepeach
otherhot,butfarenoughawayfromeachothertoallow
airowbetweenthem.
7. Once there is an established bed of coals, set the
BurnRateAirControltothedesiredsettingfollowing
theinstructionsfoundintheSection:BurnRatesand
OperatingEfciency.
8. Ifyouhaveinstalledtheoptionalblower,pleasenotethat
theblowertendstocooltheappliance.Leavetheblower
offuntiltheburniswellestablished,i.e.,30minutes.
NOTICE:
• Buildreonbrickreboxoor.
• DoNOTusegrates,andironsorothermethodstosup-
portfuelasitwilladverselyaffectemissions.
9. Whenreadytoreload,ItisbesttosettheBurnRateAir
ControlintheHighpositionbefore reloading.
• Thislivensupthecoalbedandreducesexcessiveemis-
sions(opacity/smoke).
• Opendoorslowlysothatashorsmokedoesnotexitap-
pliancethroughopening.
• Largelogsburnslowly,holdingarelonger.
• Smalllogsburnfastandhot,givingquickheat.

Aslongastherearehotcoals,repeatingsteps6through
8willmaintainacontinuousrethroughouttheseason.

of the replace.

• Storeammablematerialsclosetothereplace,or
• Usegasoline,lanternfuel,kerosene,charcoal
