5 The check engine light can come on for a variety of reasons. If you don't notice any change in performance (ie. no new sounds or difficulty starting or driving car) it could be as simple as a sensor going bad. Newer vehicles (especially) have many sensors to detect and make sure everything is running smoothly. But sometimes the sensors themselves go bad, and need to be replaced. In your case though it would be best to take your vehicle to an auto parts store, and ask them to check the computer within your car (it stores most of that diagnostic information). This is a free service, and should only take a couple of minutes. Again, there can be many reasons why the check engine light can come on, some critical and some not. Its best to get it resolved sooner rather than later. Even if it's not something detrimental to your car, if the engine light stays on it could mask the presence of bigger issues in the future. Hope this helps
