charge current needle bouncing from zero to 7+ amps

0 Replaced 4 of these, finally on the last malfunction decide to open up and find out what the problem is: The charger is rate at 55 amps, but the SCR switch in the controller is also rated a 55 Amps. With the full rating going trough it and with a sub-standard heat sink , the SCR tends to crack, and becomes useless. In the process of replacing it with a 70 or 80 amp rated one., that should make it a more durable unit.
