my check engine lights comes on, on my 1994 chevy ...

my check engine lights comes on, on my 1994 chevy silverado 1500 4x4 5.7 truck and when the light comes on it sucks up alot of gasoline at that point. why ? and what do i have to change in order to save gasoline.
