Steering
Steering Inspection
Using the jack, raise the front wheel off the ground.
Special Tool - Jack: 57001-1238
With the front wheel pointing straight ahead, alternately
nudge each end of the handlebar. The front wheel should
swing fully left and right from the force of gravity until the
fork hits the stop.
If the steering binds or catches before the stop, check the
routing of the cables, hoses, and harnesses.
If the steering feels tight, adjust or lubricate the steering.
Feel for steering looseness by pushing and pulling the
forks.
If you feel looseness, adjust the steering.
Steering Adjustment
Remove the number plate.
Using the jack, raise the front wheel off the ground.
Special Tool - Jack: 57001-1238
Remove the handlebar.
Loosen the front fork clamp bolts [A] and steering stem
head nut [B].
Turn the steering stem nut [A] with the steering stem nut
wrench [B] to obtain the proper adjustment.
If the steering is too tight, loosen the steering stem nut a
fraction of a turn; if the steering is too loose, tighten the
nutafractionofaturn.
Special Tool - Steering Stem Nut Wrench: 57001-1100
NOTE
Turn the steering stem nut 1/8 turn at a time maximum.
Tighten the following:
Torque - Steering Stem Head Nut: 44 N·m (4.5 kgf·m, 33
ft·lb)
Front Fork Clamp Bolts (Lower): 29 N ·m (3.0
kgf·m, 22 ft·lb)
