Camshaft Bearing Wear
The journal wear is measured using plastigage (press
gauge), which is inserted into the clearance to be mea-
sured. The plastigage indicates the clearance by the
amount it is compressed and widened when the parts are
assembled.
Cut strips of plastigage to journal width. Place a strip on
each journal parallel t o the camshaft with the camshaft
installed in the correct position so that the plastigage will
be compressed between the journal and rocker case.
Install the rocker case, tightening the bolts in the correct
sequence to the specified torque (see Rocker Case In-
stallation).
NOTE
Do not turn the camshaft when the plastigage is be-
tween the journal and rocker case.
Remove the r ocker case and measure the plastigage
width [A] to determine the clearance between the journal
and the r ocker case. Measure the widest portion of the
plastigage.
Camshaft Bearing Clearance ( 18)
Standard: 0.016 0.052 mm (0.0006 0.0020 in.)
Service Limit: 0.14 mm (0.0055 in.)
Camshaft Bearing Clearance (
22)
Standard: 0.020 0.062 mm (0.0008 0.0024 in.)
Service Limit: 0.15 mm (0.0059 in.)
If any clearance exceeds the service limit, measure the
diameter of the camshaft journal.
Camshaft Journal Diameter ( 18)
Standard: 17.966 17.984 mm (0.7073 0.7080 in.)
Service Limit: 17.94 mm (0.706 in.)
Camshaft Journal Diameter (
22)
Standard: 21.959 21.980 mm (0.8645 0.8653 in.)
Service Limit: 21.93 mm (0.863 in.)
If the camshaft journal diameter is less than the service
limit, replace the cam shaft with a new one and measure
the clearance again.
If the clearance still remains out of the limit, replace the
cylinder head and the rocker case.
CAUTION
The cylinder head and rocker case are machined as
a set, and must be replaced as a set.
